Budgeting is just telling your money where to go before it disappears. A beginner plan needs only four steps.
Step 1: Know Your Take-Home Income
Use net pay after taxes and deductions, not gross. If your income varies, plan on a conservative low month.
Step 2: List Fixed and Variable Expenses
- Fixed: rent, loan minimums, insurance, subscriptions.
- Variable: food, gas, dining, entertainment.
Step 3: Assign Every Dollar
Cover needs first, then savings, then wants. If expenses exceed income, cut variable spending or fixed costs you control.
Step 4: Review Monthly
Compare plan to actuals for ten minutes each month. The goal is progress, not perfection. Our Personal Budget Calculator structures the plan for you.
